Different Types of Stainless Steel Used in the Production of Pipe and Fittings

Stainless steel is a widely used material in the production of pipe and fittings due to its excellent corrosion resistance, strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal. However, not all stainless steels are created equal. There are different types of stainless steel that vary in composition, properties, and applications

Austenitic Stainless Steel

Austenitic stainless steel is the most commonly used type of stainless steel for pipe and fittings due to its excellent corrosion resistance, formability, weldability, and toughness. It contains high levels of chromium (usually 18% or more) and nickel (usually 8% or more) which provide its superior corrosion resistance. Austenitic stainless steel can be further classified into two subgroups: 300 series and 200 series.

  • 300 Series: The most widely used for pipe and fittings due to their excellent corrosion resistance even in harsh environments such as marine or chemical processing plants. The most common grades within this group are 304/304L (UNS S30400/S30403), 316/316L (UNS S31600/S31603), and 321 (UNS S32100). These grades offer a good combination of strength, ductility, formability, weldability, and corrosion resistance.

Ferritic Stainless Steel

Ferritic stainless steel is another type of stainless steel commonly used for pipe and fittings due to its good corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, low thermal expansion coefficient, and magnetic properties. It contains high levels of chromium (usually 12% or more) and low levels of nickel (usually less than 2%). Ferritic stainless steel can be further classified into two subgroups: standard and stabilized.

  • Standard Ferritic Stainless Steels: The most commonly used for pipe and fittings due to their good corrosion resistance in mildly corrosive environments such as water or atmospheric conditions. The most common grades within this group are 409 (UNS S40900), 430 (UNS S43000), and 439 (UNS S43035).

Martensitic Stainless Steel

Martensitic stainless steel is a type of stainless steel commonly used for pipe and fittings that require high strength, hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. It contains high levels of chromium (usually 12% or more) and low levels of nickel (usually less than 2%). Martensitic stainless steel can be further classified into two subgroups: heat-treatable and precipitation hardenable.

  • Heat-Treatable Martensitic Stainless Steels: Can be hardened by heat treatment to achieve high strength, hardness, and wear resistance but at the cost of reduced ductility, toughness, formability, and corrosion resistance. The most common grades within this group are 410 (UNS S41000) and 420 (UNS S42000).

Duplex Stainless Steel

Duplex stainless steel contains both austenitic and ferritic microstructures in roughly equal proportions. It offers a unique combination of high strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and weldability. Duplex stainless steel can be further classified into two subgroups: standard and super.

  • Standard Duplex Stainless Steels: The most commonly used for pipe and fittings due to their good corrosion resistance in aggressive environments such as those containing chlorides or acids. The most common grades within this group are 2205 (UNS S32205/S31803) and 2507 (UNS S32750).

FAQ

1)Why Ashapura's stainless steel is best?

The quality and suitability of stainless steel products can vary based on several factors, including the grade of stainless steel, manufacturing processes, quality control measures, and customer requirements. Ashapura’s stainless steel is the best choice for your specific needs, they have best Grade of Stainless Steel,Certifications and Standards,Technical Support and Services, Pricing and Availability.

2)Which is better SS 304 or 316?

The choice between SS 304 (AISI 304) and SS 316 (AISI 316) depends on the specific application and requirements. Both 304 and 316 are stainless steel grades, and they have similar appearances but differ in terms of their chemical composition, corrosion resistance, and suitability for different environments
SS 304- Contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10.5% nickel. It also has a small amount of manganese and carbon.
SS 316- Contains 16-18% chromium, 10-14% nickel, 2-3% molybdenum, and a small amount of manganese and carbon.
Corrosion Resistance-
SS 316- Has superior corrosion resistance compared to SS 304, especially in environments where chloride ions are present, such as marine environments or industrial settings with corrosive chemicals.
SS 304- Offers good corrosion resistance for most applications but may not be as resistant as SS 316 in highly corrosive environments.

3)What is the size of SS sheet in maharshtra?

sizes for stainless steel sheets include Following Factors-
Thickness- Stainless steel sheets are available in various thicknesses, typically ranging from 0.5mm to several millimeters.
Width- Standard widths for stainless steel sheets are typically 1,000mm (1 meter) or 1,219mm (4 feet), but wider sheets may also be available.
Length- The length of stainless steel sheets can vary, with common lengths being 2,000mm (2 meters) or 2,438mm (8 feet). Custom lengths can often be cut to order.
It’s important to note that stainless steel sheets can be cut and customized to meet specific size requirements. This is often done by the supplier or a metal fabrication shop to ensure that the sheet meets the precise needs of the project or application.

4)How many grades are there in SS sheet?

Stainless steel sheets (SS sheets) come in various grades
Austenitic Series (e.g., 304, 316)
Ferritic Series (e.g., 430)
Martensitic Series (e.g., 410, 420)
Duplex Series (e.g., 2205)
Precipitation Hardening Series (e.g., 17-4 PH)
