Types of Duplex Stainless Steel Plates

Lean Duplex Stainless Steel Plates

Lean duplex stainless steel plates have a low nickel content, which makes them more affordable than other types of duplex stainless steel plates. They contain around 17-18% chromium and 4-6% nickel, making them ideal for use in applications where corrosion resistance is required but not at high levels.

Standard Duplex Stainless Steel Plates

Standard duplex stainless steel plates have a balanced composition of austenite and ferrite phases, which gives them excellent mechanical properties along with good corrosion resistance. They contain around 22-23% chromium and 5-6% nickel, making them suitable for use in harsh environments where high strength is required.

Super Duplex Stainless Steel Plates

Super duplex stainless steel plates have an even higher level of chromium (around 25%) than standard duplex stainless steel plates, along with increased molybdenum content (around 3%). This makes them highly resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion, making them ideal for use in offshore oil rigs or marine environments.

Hyper Duplex Stainless Steel Plates

Hyper duplex stainless steel plates have an even higher level of alloying elements such as chromium (around 30%) and molybdenum (around 7%), giving them superior strength and corrosion resistance properties compared to other types of duplex stainless steel plates. These plates are commonly used in chemical processing plants or desalination plants due to their excellent resistance to corrosion.

Fabrication Techniques for Duplex Stainless Steel Plates

Duplex stainless steel plates can be cut using various methods such as plasma cutting, water jet cutting, or laser cutting. However, care must be taken to avoid overheating the material and causing distortion. Bending and forming duplex stainless steel plates require higher forces than austenitic stainless steels due to their higher yield strength. Therefore, it is recommended to use a press brake with a larger capacity or multiple passes to achieve the desired shape. Drilling and tapping duplex stainless steel plates can also be challenging due to their high strength and toughness. It is recommended to use carbide-tipped drills and slow speeds with ample coolant to prevent work hardening.
