Key Grades of Monel Sheets

Monel K500 (UNS N05500)

Monel K500 is a precipitation-hardened alloy that incorporates aluminum and titanium, offering greater strength and hardness compared to Monel 400. The age-hardening process, which involves heating the alloy followed by rapid cooling, enhances the alloy’s strength by forming fine precipitates within the material. This grade is highly resistant to seawater corrosion and is ideal for demanding environments.

Monel R405 (UNS N04405)

Monel R405 is a free-machining grade that includes sulfur, improving machinability while slightly reducing ductility and impact strength. It’s commonly used in the manufacture of fasteners, shafts, valves, and fittings, particularly where precise machining is required.

Monel 404 (UNS N04404)

Monel 404 is an alloy containing copper, nickel, iron, manganese, silicon, carbon, and sulfur. It provides good corrosion resistance in seawater but has lower mechanical properties than Monel 400, making it suitable for applications where moderate strength is acceptable.

ASME SB Monel Sheets Equivalent Grades

SB 127 - UNS N04400

SB 127 specification covers Monel 400 sheets and plates that are made from UNS N04400 alloy. This grade of Monel has excellent resistance to seawater corrosion, acids, alkalis, and stress corrosion cracking. It can be easily fabricated using conventional methods such as hot or cold working.

SB 127 - UNS N05500

SB 127 specification also covers Monel K500 sheets and plates that are made from UNS N05500 alloy. This grade of Monel has higher strength than Monel 400 due to the addition of aluminum and titanium elements. It offers excellent resistance to seawater corrosion, erosion-corrosion, cavitation damage, and high-velocity seawater impingement.

SB 168 - UNS N06600

SB 168 specification covers Monel 600 sheets and plates that are made from UNS N06600 alloy. This grade of Monel has excellent resistance to oxidation at high temperatures up to 2000°F (1093°C). It also offers good mechanical properties at low temperatures down to -450°F (-268°C).

SB 575 - UNS N10276

SB 575 specification covers Hastelloy C276 sheets and plates that are made from UNS N10276 alloy. Although it is not a pure form of Monel alloy, it contains nickel, molybdenum, chromium, and tungsten elements that enhance its corrosion resistance in harsh environments. It is commonly used in chemical processing, pulp and paper manufacturing, and waste treatment industries.

SB 625 - UNS N06625

SB 625 specification covers Inconel 625 sheets and plates that are made from UNS N06625 alloy. Similar to Hastelloy C276, it is not a pure form of Monel alloy but contains nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and niobium elements that provide excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and intergranular attack. It is widely used in aerospace, marine engineering, and nuclear power generation industries.

FAQ

What is Monel used for?

Monel is a type of nickel-copper alloy known for its excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine environments and acidic conditions. Due to its resistance to corrosion and high strength, Monel is commonly used in applications like marine equipment (such as boat propellers and valves), aerospace components, chemical processing equipment, oil and gas industry components, and in the manufacturing of musical instruments.

Is Monel stronger than steel?

Monel is not inherently stronger than all types of steel. The strength of Monel, a nickel-copper alloy, can vary depending on its specific composition and heat treatment. In general, some steel alloys, like high-strength stainless steels or carbon steels, can have higher tensile strength than Monel. However, Monel is valued for its corrosion resistance in harsh environments, which is often more important than its strength in certain applications.

What type of material is Monel?

Monel is a type of nickel-copper alloy. It is primarily composed of nickel (typically around 65-70%) and copper, with smaller amounts of other elements such as iron, manganese, and small traces of other metals. Monel alloys are known for their excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine and acidic environments. They are used in various industries where resistance to corrosion and high-stress conditions is crucial.

What is the price of a 1kg Monel?
